Frequently Asked Questions

Our Rails Hosting

How quickly do you respond to support requests?
We monitor support requests 24 hours/day and usually within 3 hours.
How do I add an additional domain to my account?
Submit a support request with the domain name you wish to add. You'll need to setup our nameservers with the registrar you used to reserve the domain.

Our nameservers are:

  • DNS1.SLINGSHOTHOSTING.COM
  • DNS2.SLINGSHOTHOSTING.COM
  • DNS3.SLINGSHOTHOSTING.COM

Our Plans

Are there any setup fees or minimum contracts?
No extra fees or minimum contracts. Just a monthly fee with no commitments!
Who manages my server?
We help you get your application running and maintain the software on the server (update Ruby Gems, manage security updates, etc.). You get total and complete control of the server.
I've heard that Rails doesn't scale -- how do you guys do it?
Not surprisingly, we've found that most scaling issues are not caused by the use of a specific framework or language. Systems such as incoming email processors and synchronizing using hourly cron jobs can slow any application to a crawl if used incorrectly. When you work with Slingshot, you have access to a support staff of Rails developers that have overcome these issues and can help you analyze bottlenecks in the underlying system setup.
Does your plan come with Java/PHP/Zend/Django/TurboGears?
No. Slingshot Hosting provides Ruby on Rails business hosting environments only. We prefer to do one thing, and do it well. There are many other excellent all-you-can-eat buffets out there, but we're only serving fillet mignon, one table at a time.
What about DNS?
We run our own distributed DNS pool and are experienced in migrating and load-balancing servers. We can migrate your app with 0 downtime, and arrange to migrate gradually, or all at once -- and rollback instantly.
Can I resell my space/bandwidth/account?
The answer is no. These plans are for businesses who require an ideal, secluded environment for hosting web applications powered by Ruby on Rails.
Do you offer a Virtual Private Server Plan (VPS)?
No. We (and our clients) love the stability, security, and flexibility of a dedicated server. That's not to say we're not a fan of virtualized service offerings like Amazon EC2 and S3 services (we use both of these regularly), we just haven't found a VPS setup yet we're comfortable using ourselves.
How much bandwidth do I get?
Bandwidth plans range from server to server. Each month, bandwidth allocation is allocated, and additional traffic is billed at $0.89 GB /mo. In addition the the Bandwidth limits listed above, we offer 5Mbps, 10Mbps, and 100Mbps un-metered for the ultimate in scalability. Talk to us if you foresee needing more on individual plans.
How long does it take for my account to be available?
3-5 Business Days.
